专家简介:
Dr Chen gained his PhD degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Western Australia in 2012. He has been working as a lecturer at mining engineering department of the University of Queensland since January 2013. His research has been focused on the areas of computational geomechanics, rock-gas interaction for the unconventional gas recovery, coal seam in particularly, and carbon sequestration. He was awarded the American Rock Mechanics Association Research Award for 2011 and ARC Discovery project for 2015. So far, he has contributed to two books, and published over 15 SCI papers and 11 international conference articles. He also serves as a reviewer of nine international journals.
Abstract:
Permeability is probably the most important parameter for analysing coal seam gas extraction performance. It is affected significantly by the interaction between coal properties, gas compositions and saturations, and reservoir conditions etc. A large collection of coal permeability models have been developed so far from empirical ones to theoretical ones with a set of common assumptions: (1) coal deforms under the uniaxial strain condition; (2) the effective stress coefficient is assumed as one; and (3) the sorption-induced strain is totally counteracted by the closure of the cleat aperture.
This presentation will discuss the validity of these assumptions by comparing with the experimental data on coal samples, followed by the introduction of a newly developed coal permeability which combines the effect of swelling strain with that of the mechanical effective stress. Finally, the explanation of why coal permeability reduces with the adsorption of adsorbing gas under laboratory conditions will be presented based on fully coupled numerical modelling results.
