The State Key Laboratory of Mineral Processing was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China in April 2008 and was established under the auspices of BGRIMM Technology Group (formerly the Beijing General Research Institute of Mining and Metallurgy). The laboratory successfully passed national acceptance and commenced full operation in July 2013. In the 2017 national evaluation of 99 enterprise-based State Key Laboratories organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology, it was recognized as one of only 25 laboratories rated “Excellent” and was the sole laboratory in the field of metallic mineral resource development to receive this distinction. Following a national reorganization in 2025, the laboratory was upgraded to the State Key Laboratory of Mineral Processing Science and Technology, jointly supported by BGRIMM Technology Group, Central South University, and Northeastern University.

  

Guided by China's strategic demand for critical mineral resources, the laboratory is dedicated to advancing fundamental theories and key technologies for the clean, efficient, and sustainable development and utilization of mineral resources. Through the integration of industry, education, and research, the laboratory promotes the cultivation of new quality productive forces and accelerates the commercialization of next-generation mineral processing equipment and reagent technologies. It provides comprehensive solutions for the efficient extraction, beneficiation, and integrated utilization of mineral resources, enhances original innovation capabilities, strengthens the development of generic and enabling technologies, and facilitates the transfer and industrial application of scientific achievements.

  

Committed to supporting the high-quality development of China's mining industry, the laboratory actively advances technological innovation in green mineral resource development, energy conservation, environmental protection, and the circular economy. It has achieved remarkable accomplishments in scientific research, talent cultivation, and technology transfer, earning widespread recognition from both the domestic and international academic and industrial communities. Today, the laboratory stands as one of the world's most influential centers for scientific research, talent development, academic exchange, and technology commercialization in the field of mineral processing.

  

The laboratory has undertaken more than 200 national-level research projects, including those funded by the National Key R&D Program of China, the National Basic Research Program (973 Program), the National Science and Technology Support Program, National Science and Technology Major Projects, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, international collaborative research initiatives, and strategic consulting programs of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

  

Its research achievements include six Second Prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, one China Patent Silver Award, more than twenty provincial- and ministerial-level science and technology awards, and over fifty First Prizes for Scientific and Technological Progress granted by national professional societies and industry associations. The laboratory has also played a leading role in the development of twelve international standards and contributed to the formulation and publication of 665 national and industry standards. In addition, its researchers have published more than 2,000 papers in leading domestic and international academic journals.

  

The laboratory will continue to address major national strategic needs and frontier scientific challenges in mineral processing. By strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration and international partnerships, it aims to further enhance its global influence and contribute to the sustainable development of mineral resources and the advancement of the global mining industry.
