The School of Resources and Civil Engineering at Northeastern University was established in September 1995 following the merger of the Departments of Mining Engineering and Mineral Engineering. It currently employs 252 faculty and staff members, including those affiliated with the State Key Laboratory of Intelligent Deep Mining and Equipment. The facultycomprises 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2 external academicians, 14 national leading talents, 12 national young talents, 77 professors, and 91 associate professors. The School enrolls a total of 3,393 students, including 1,703 undergraduates, 1,027 master's candidates, and 663 doctoral candidates.
The School offers 8 undergraduate programs, 5 first-level discipline master's programs, 5 first-level discipline doctoral programs, 2 second-level master's programs, 2 professional master's programs in engineering, and 2 professional doctoral programs in engineering. Mining Engineering is designated as a national key discipline, while Mineral Processing Engineering is recognized as a national key discipline under cultivation. The School also hosts 5 postdoctoral research stations.
Since its foundation, the School has consistently prioritized teaching excellence and talent cultivation. Its educational endeavors have been widely recognized, receiving 1 National Teaching Achievement Award and 29 provincial or ministerial-level teaching awards. The School has also developed 3 national-level quality courses, 7 national first-class courses, 42 provincial first-class courses, 3 provincial quality courses, and 3 provincial quality public courses. In addition, it offers 4 national distinctive programs, 4 Outstanding Engineer Education and Training Programs, 6 national first-class undergraduate programs, and 7 provincial first-class undergraduate programs. Five of these programs have been accredited by the China Engineering Education Professional Accreditation Association.
The School is equipped with multiple advanced teaching and research platforms, including the National Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center for Rock Mechanics and Safe Mining of Metal Mines, the Liaoning Provincial Demonstration Center for Experimental Teaching of Geomechanics and Engineering, and the national-level Engineering Practice Education Center jointly established with Shandong Zhaojin Group.
In the realm of research and innovation, the School has produced 1 National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation and 2 papers that have received the International Rocha Prize. It has been honored with 11 National Science and Technology Progress Awards and 1 National Technological Invention Award, along with 305 provincial or ministerial-level awards at second prize or above. Faculty members have undertaken 5,803 research projects, including those under the National 973 and 863 Programs, the National Key Scientific and Technological Projects, the Key Research and Development Programs of China, and the projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. They have also published 9,857 high-level academic papers, authored 296 monographs and textbooks, and been granted 1,625 patents. Research funding has consistently exceeded 100 million yuan annually for seven consecutive years, reaching 443 million yuan in 2023.
The School hosts 19 advanced research centers, including the National Key Laboratory of Intelligent Mining and Equipment for Deep Metal Mines, the National Key Laboratory of Mineral Processing Science and Technology (co-established), the International Joint Laboratory of Deep Earth Science and Engineering (accredited by the Ministry of Education), the 111 Plan Talent Innovation Base for Deep Engineering Rock Mechanics and Safety (co-sponsored by the Ministry of Education and the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs), the National-Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Efficient Development and Utilization of Difficult-to-Mine Iron Ores, the Key Laboratory of Ground Pressure Hazard Prevention in Deep Metal Mines (under the Mining Safety Supervision Bureau), and the Northeastern University Filter Material Testing Center (certified for national environmental protection testing).
