• Mining Engineering Institute

  • Founded in 1950, Mining Engineering discipline in Northeastern University is one of the earliest established institutions in China. As one of the universities qualified to confer doctor and master degree in 1981 and 1984 respectively, this discipline has been authorized as the first batch of national key discipline in 1987. In 1992, it established post-doctoral research station, and in 1996 it became key discipline of China¡¯s ¡°211 Project¡±. It sets professor positions in 1998, the support for the subject construction in ¡°985 Project¡± in 2004, and the mining engineering laboratory honored as the key laboratory of Liaoning Province.

    Since the establishment of this discipline, it has become an important base for education in mining engineering with approximate 200 doctors and 400 graduates, about 5000 undergraduates. Mining engineering discipline has constantly devoted itself to improve students¡¯ knowledge of professional theory and engineering practice ability, forming obvious professional advantage and its unique characteristics. In 2008, it was certified by China Engineering Education Accreditation Association, and became the featured specialty of national higher education in 2010. It was also listed in the ¡°excellent engineer training program¡± established by the Ministry of Education which is a good foundation for students¡¯ engineering practice ability.

    In recent years, it actively explores the mode of excellent engineer training, among which High Mining Engineering Education of Excellent Talent Training Mode Reform and Practice won the first prize of Liaoning provincial teaching achievement in 2012. Meanwhile, Mining Science£¨textbook£©won the first prize of Liaoning provincial teaching achievement in 2012 and the second prize of national teaching achievement in 2014.

    Mining Engineering Institute owns a rigorous, cooperative and creative academic group, including 12 full-time professors (9 doctoral student advisers, 2 winners of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and 1 distinguished professor), 3 winners of Education Ministry¡¯s New Century Excellent Supporting Plan, 5 associate professors and 10 lecturers). In recent years, the institute sets specific goals in four main research directions: exploration of mining bed with high efficiency and low dilution and loss, mechanism and prediction of dynamic disaster in mines, reducing and recycling of waste in mining procedure and digital mining technology and optimization. In the past five years, it has taken on 189 research projects (total research fund of 89.81 million RMB). Among them, there are 77 transverse projects (total fund of 43.33 million RMB) and 112 vertical projects (total funds of 46.48 million RMB).Vertical projects include 4 sub-projects of ¡°973 project¡±, 4 sub-projects of ¡°863 project¡±, 1 key cooperative project of Ministry of Science and Technology and 6 national science and technology support projects; meanwhile it has also undertaken 21 National Natural Science Foundation projects, including 1 Outstanding Young Science Foundation, 3 sub-projects of key Program supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 research fund of oversea and Hong Kong and Macao scholars and 4 international cooperation projects. It has also won 3 national technology progress awards, 6 first prizes of provincial- ministerial level award and 20 second prizes. In addition, it has obtained 12 invention patents, 4 practical patents and 3 computer software copyright registrations of independent intelligent property right. The institute has published 9 monographs and over 300 papers.

    Mining Engineering Institute has strengthened international exchanges and cooperation with other oversea universities. At present, the institute has established academic exchange and cooperation relationships with more than 40 universities and institutes around the world. Every year, the institute invites more than 20 foreign scholars to give lectures to students and selects excellent teachers to attend international conferences and make academic exchanges and cooperation with foreign scholars. The international academic seminar of New Development of rock mechanics (NDRM04) and the 274th and 268th Young Scientist Forum of China Association for Science and Technology have been held by MEI.
