A letter of condolence--Deeply mourn for Prof Yunmei Lin!
Dear Prof Feng and Colleagues of Northeast University,
It was with an extreme sense of shock and sadness when we heard that Prof. Yunmei Lin passed away in Shenyang China on March 17, 2020, at the age of 88. Professor Lin is a well-known expert in international society of rock mechanics, pioneer of rock mechanics and mining engineering in China, the inventor of dynamic classification of rock masses, and one of the initiators who draftedthe china’s first national standard on engineering classification of rock masses. Prof. Lin’s research covers rock classification, mining rock mechanics, block theory, numerical modelling, etc. According to Prof. Genhua Shi, the honorary president of IRSM DDA commission, Prof. Lin translated and published Rock Mechanics and Mining Support in 1955, which should be the first textbook on rock mechanics in China. In the past 40 years, Prof. Lin has published 14 monographs (e.g. Ground Pressure Lecture, Experiments in Rock Mechanics, Theory and Practice of Rock Classification, etc.), and more than 70 journal papers.
Professor Lin has made outstanding contributions to the development of rock mechanics and education in China. Prof. Lin has dedicated her life to rock mechanics who has served as an executive director of the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering, the chairman of the Northeast Branch of the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering, a vice chairman of the Board of Directors and Education of the Chinese Society of Rock Mechanics and Engineering.
The depart of Prof. Lin is not only a loss for the field of education, science and technology in China but also a great loss in the field of international rock mechanics.
We deeply mourn and honor the memory of Prof. Lin, who will always be held in high esteem.
Yours Sincerely
