The Department of Mining Engineering at Northeastern University is one of the most long-established and academically distinguished teaching and research institutions in the field of mining engineering in China. Since its establishment, the discipline has consistently aligned with national demands for resource security and industrial modernization. It focuses on addressing critical technological challenges in the safe, efficient, green, and intelligent extraction of mineral resources. Committed to cultivating globally competitive engineering professionals with innovative thinking and practical expertise, the department has produced numerous leading talents for  mining industry in China, including five academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). Renowned for its comprehensive capabilities, the discipline maintains a leading position in education and research in mining engineering in China.

Discipline History and Academic Standing

Established in 1926, the Mining Engineering discipline at Northeastern University pioneered China's first ferrous metal mining engineering program and stands as one of the nation's earliest mining engineering specialties. With a century-long legacy, it has maintained a profound academic heritage and remains at the forefront of China's mining education and research. Designated as a national key discipline in 1987, it has been included in China's inaugural Project 985, Project 211, and Double First-Class Initiative. In 2024, the discipline earned accreditation under the fifth round of China Engineering Education Certification and secured approval for the StateKey Laboratory of Intelligent Deep Metal Mining and Equipment, marking its entry into the global first-tier of mining engineering disciplines.

Faculty and Research Platforms

The discipline has assembled a high-caliber faculty team led by academicians and anchored by national-level talents. The Department of Mining Engineering currently employs 12 professors, 1 research professor, and 11 associate professors, including 4 national high-level talents, 1 member of the National Teaching Steering Committee for Mining Engineering, 1 member of the Engineering Education Accreditation Committee for Mining, and 2 experts from the Ministry of Education's Undergraduate Education Teaching Review and Evaluation. Guided by the mission of serving national strategies and leading industry transformation, the discipline leverages 12 national and provincial-level research platforms, such as the State Key Laboratory of Intelligent Deep Metal Mining and Equipment and the Key Laboratory of the National Mine Safety Administration, to establish an innovation system spanning basic theory, key technologies, and engineering applications. Over the past five years, the department has undertaken 195 research projects, including National Science and Technology Major Project, National Key Research and Development Program, Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) initiatives, with total funding exceeding 115 million yuan. It has earned over 30 provincial/ministerial-level first prizes in scientific and technological awards, and its research achievements have been applied in more than 100 mining enterprises nationwide, delivering significant technological transformation benefits.

Research Focus

Aligned with national strategic demands and industry frontiers, the discipline has established four distinctive research directions:

1. Green, Intelligent, and Safe Mining of Open-Pit Mines and Solid Waste Utilization

2. Rock Mass Mechanics and Safety Mining in Deep Engineering

3. Mining-Induced Rock Failure Mechanisms and Disaster Early Warning/Prevention

4. Efficient and Intelligent Mining Technologies for Complex and Refractory Ore Deposits

Talent Cultivation and Teaching Innovation

The discipline adheres to the educational philosophy of solid foundation, strong practical skills, and emphasis on innovation, establishing a distinctive talent cultivation system.

Specialized Programs: Offers the Mining Engineering Innovative Experimental Class and the Integrated Bachelor-PhD Program in Deep Engineering and Intelligent Technologies, featuring small-class instruction, dual mentorshipsystems, and enhanced research and engineering practice training.

Curriculum System: Core courses include Underground Mining Method for Metal Deposits, Open Pit Mining of Metal Deposits, Fundamentals of Solid Mechanics and Rock Mechanics, Resource Economics, Drilling and Blasting, Mine Rock Mechanics, Shaft and Tunnel Engineering, and Mine Ventilation and Safety. Cutting-edge courses such as Big Data and Artificial Intelligence in Deep Engineering are integrated to bridge traditional mining with intelligent technologies.
