History

The department of surveying and mapping engineering at Northeastern University boasts a long-standing development history. Since the 1920s, the surveying and mapping laboratory was established, offering surveying and mapping courses for majors like architecture, civil engineering, and mining. In January 1997, the Shenyang Gold college merged into Northeastern University, and students majoring in Surveying and Mapping Engineering were enrolled. The surveying and mapping discipline has gone through rapid development in the past near 30 years. In 2003, it was granted the authority to confer master's degrees in the second-level discipline of geodesy and surveying engineering. In 2005, it obtained the authority to confer master's degrees in the first-level discipline of surveying and mapping science and technology. In 2008, Geodesy and Surveying Engineering was recognized as a key discipline in Liaoning Province. In 2019, it passed the engineering education professional certification and was approved as a first-class undergraduate major in Liaoning Province. In 2020, it was granted for constructing national first-class undergraduate major. Currently, the Department of Surveying and Mapping Engineering has 21 teachers, including 5 professors and 7 associate professors.

Scientific Research

The surveying and mapping discipline adheres to its traditional advantages and characteristics in disaster remote sensing and digital mining. A series of achievements have been made in the characteristic directions of remote sensing rock mechanics, mining region environment, and disaster remote sensing. In the past 10 years, the Department of Surveying and Mapping Engineering has published 5 monographs and over 300 academic papers (including more than 100 papers indexed in the three major databases). It has won 2 National Science and Technology Progress Awards and 23 provincial and ministerial-level science and technology awards, and has 15 software copyright registrations. The department has completed one National Outstanding Youth Fund project, three National 863 Program projects, two National 973 Program sub-projects, oneNational Key Research and Development Program, fourNational Key Research and Development Programsub-projects, 22 National Natural Science Foundation projects, one Liaoning Province Innovation Team project, and more than two hundredindustry-funded projects, with an average annual research funding of approximately 8 million yuan.

Talents Recruitment

The Department of Surveying and Mapping Engineering offers an undergraduate major in Surveying and Mapping Engineering, a master's program in Surveyingand Mapping Science and Technology, and four master's programs in secondary disciplines: Geodesy and Surveying Engineering, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Cartography and Geographic Information Engineering, and Mining and Underground Surveying. It also recruits doctoral students in the first-level disciplines of Mining Engineering and Geological Resources and Geological Engineering. Approximately 8 doctoral candidate, 20 postgraduate and 60 undergraduate students will be recruited every year. In terms of employment, there is a strong demand for talents in surveying and mapping science and technology in dozens of fields, including surveying, land use, planning, transportation, geology, minerals, petroleum, agriculture, forestry, water conservancy, ecology, environment, and the military.
